The standard technique for safely using a portable fire extinguisher
The PASS method is the standard, NFPA- and OSHA-recommended technique for safely using a portable fire extinguisher. It's easy to remember and designed to give you the best chance of controlling a small fire while staying safe.
Hold the extinguisher upright and pull the pin (or break the seal). This unlocks the handle.
Point the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire (not the flames). The fuel is at the base — hitting there stops the fire from spreading.
Squeeze the handle slowly and evenly to release the extinguishing agent. Release to stop.
Sweep the nozzle from side to side in a controlled motion, covering the base of the fire until it's out.
Always stay between the fire and your exit — never let the fire get behind you.
Only fight small, contained fires — if it's larger than a wastebasket, evacuate and call 911.
Back away if the fire isn't out — extinguishers last 8–20 seconds.
Evacuate if smoke or heat is intense — your safety comes first.
